Mount rinjani (3.726 m) located in the northern part of Lombok, is the second highest volcano in Indonesia. It’s sacred by both Hindu and Muslim people. For the Hindu people, Rinjani is a holy place which they believe as the home of Gods. A large crater lake ”Segara Anak” located at 2000 meter above sea level, is the destination of many pilgrims who make the annual trek up the steep slopes in order to put offering the Gods in the lake its self. Within this breathtaking Crater Lake, there is a new volcano called Gunung Baru has appeared. Nearby is a hot spring which is believed to cure diseases.
To climb such an impressive mountain is an unforgettable experience. Starting point for the trek can begin at Senaru in the northern west lombok or at sembalun lawang in the northern of East lombok.
The first historical eruption occurred in September of 1847. The most recent eruption of MountRinjani was on 1 October 2004. The 6 km by 8.5 km oval-shaped caldera is filled partially by a lake known as Segara Anak. The eruptions of 1994, 1995, and 1996 have formed a small cone in the center of the caldera and lava flows from these eruptions have entered the lake.
